<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
mensaje: </span>For me, Achievements are stepping stones is a continuous search for excellence.

</div>

<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Por ejemplo en el aspecto personal: </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<ul>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
En el trabajo comunitario:</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<ul>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
En el negocio:</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<ul>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I have been so busy working with the LATISM'11 Conference team that I didn't make time to stop and think of the huge gap we are bridging. </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">As I was reading this article in <a href="http://www.extranews.net/news/7472/13/empowering-latinos-with-the-help-of-social-media#.TrZgcfgLaE5.blogger">Extra Bilingual Newspaper - Empowering Latinos with the help of Social Media</a> it all made sense "writing hand-written letters evolved into sending emails; speaking over the phone turned into texting and the use of social networks has increased" HA! Even the messenger pigeons have mutated into the Twitter birds! But I'm a strong believer that instead of talking about what we're craving for we should use these tools for a purpose that goes beyond the next lunch hour, to far more important issues. Better yet, to help awaken the new generation of mobile and digital media users. </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Why not bring the message from the ground to the online communities and vice-versa? Speaking of which... here is a picture of me in Chicago (2006) as I joined a march for immigrant rights! </span></div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />

</div>

The Secured Communities program of DHS does not permit local police officers to enforce federal immigration laws:</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-size: small;">Stop a person to ask about immigration status.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Take someone into custody to ask about immigration status.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Make decisions based on a persons race, ethnicity, or ability to speak English. </span></li>
</ul><span style="font-size: small;">If you feel you are singled out and become a victim of racial profiling PLEASE file a complaint with the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties- CRCL office. "ICE and CRCL created a new complaint system whereby individuals or organizations who believe civil rights violations connected to Secure Communities have occurred can file a complaint. For example, CRCL will investigate complaints of racial or ethnic discrimination by policing jurisdictions for which Secure Communities has been activated, and DHS will take steps to ensure that bias or other abuses do not affect immigration enforcement. <a href="http://www.ice.gov/secure_communities/get-the-facts.htm">Secured Communities: Get the Facts!</a></span><br />

The dreams, for the most part, are to serve in the military, to pursue higher education, to move on with life plans that the rest of us take for granted.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is not by any means a permanent solution. It is not what <a href="http://www.dreamactivist.org/">Dream Activists</a> have fought for years. They have engaged in civic participation to seek passage of the DREAM Act (<span style="font-size: small;">Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) and have fought tirelessly to obtain legal permanent resident status. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;">This is not a new law and certainly NOT what we need to fix a broken system. But it is something! </span>The President issued an Executive Order that basically gives "prosecutorial discretion" to evaluate certain factors when detaining, arresting, processing, and deporting undocumented immigrants such as the Dreamers. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director issued the <a href="http://www.ice.gov/doclib/secure-communities/pdf/prosecutorial-discretion-memo.pdf">ICE Memo </a> dated June 17, 2011 with specific guidelines. Please note, that this is NOTHING new, there were previous guidelines in place and use of "discretion" but it adds that among the things to consider are the following: </div><ul><li><div style="text-align: justify;">the person's length of presence in the United States, with particular consideration given to presence while in lawful status; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">the circumstances of the person's arrival in the United States and the manner of his or her entry, particularly if the alien came to the United States as a young child; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">the person's pursuit of education in the United States, with particular consideration given to those who have graduated from a U.S. high school or have successfully pursued or are pursuing a college or advanced degrees at a legitimate institution ofhigher education in the United States; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">whether the person, or the person's immediate relative, has served in the U.S. military, reserves, or national guard, with particular consideration given to those who served in combat; </div></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;">All of the above may be considered by Field Officers and Enforcement Agents as they consider the following:</div><ul><li><div style="text-align: justify;">deciding to issue or cancel a notice of detainer; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">deciding to issue, reissue, serve, file, or cancel a Notice to Appear (NTA); </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">focusing enforcement resources on particular administrative violations or conduct; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">deciding whom to stop, question, or arrest for an administrative violation; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">deciding whom to detain or to release on bond, supervision, personal recognizance, or other condition; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">seeking expedited removal orother forms ofremoval by means other thana formal removal proceeding in immigration court; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">settling or dismissing a proceeding; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">granting deferred action, granting parole, or staying a final order of removal; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">agreeing to voluntary departure, the withdrawal of an application for admission, or other action in lieu of obtaining a formal order of removal; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">pursuing an appeal; </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">executing a removal order; and </div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">responding to or joining in a motion to reopen removal proceedings and to consider joining in a motion to grant relief or a benefit. </div></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;">In reviewing the above in consultation with Immigration Lawyer <a href="http://www.anayancy-housman.com/">Anayancy Housman</a>, she warns "the final decision still rests with the Officer's use of his/her discretion, you still have to make your case and flag the Memo to the officer when requesting use of Prosecutorial Discretion". The above bullet points are taken directly from the Memo, but don't take my word for it, please read it carefully and consult your own lawyer. </div><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span>Reina I. I took the SATs… want to know my true opinion? They were torture, 5 hours of sitting in a small desk in William Paterson University with the room packed, equals exhausting. Once I finished I swear I heard my brain sizzle; that’s enough thinking and brain power in one day.</span></i></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> </span></i></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"></span></i></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">To be honest, the math section wasn’t as bad as I expected, it was bearable. But the reading passages were the problem and became tedious since they were practically everywhere. Overall I think I did fine. I had a goal of scoring a 1900 because most schools I want, require an 1800 but we’ll see what happens when the score comes in. But I’m thinking on the positive side; I studied my hardest all week, rested up the night before, and tried my hardest today. Hopefully it paid off, and if I don’t get the score I was looking for then I can try again in October. But when I try in October I hope to do even better after I take an SAT class maybe that will help me a little more.</span></i></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; font-style: normal;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> </span></i></span></span></i></span><br />

Actually I just spoke to my guidance counselor on Friday about when to start applying to college and when I should have my college essays done and I got my information. So now my next goal, start college essays over the summer. But first… I have to make it past final exams. Oh goodness!</span></i></span></span></i></span></div><div id="internal-source-marker_0.3400819778908044" style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />

It seems as though we had taken over Edelman's Pent House. It was already 9:30pm and I was trying to help our hosts by getting everyone out the door and calling it a night. Finally, the last 7 of us boarded the elevator, laughing, talking and tweeting... and five minutes later... the door opened up and SURPRISE! We were still at the top floor. Yeap! None of us had pressed the Lobby button. We were all LOL so hard, I had to step out to take this photo to capture the moment!</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkZwY7SFMKOO8aJ7wakRcW4CulNf1iXudCQM1OJdK12SMud5VjapmHK1nymUi8FWlZMjFSLxc6CF5V9HODf6ExiTmfMb_OcpeFTqUIMqJBl86DN975tPY1RbnVWs5_V7Kbfnp3poTI4g4/s1600/Elevator.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkZwY7SFMKOO8aJ7wakRcW4CulNf1iXudCQM1OJdK12SMud5VjapmHK1nymUi8FWlZMjFSLxc6CF5V9HODf6ExiTmfMb_OcpeFTqUIMqJBl86DN975tPY1RbnVWs5_V7Kbfnp3poTI4g4/s400/Elevator.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>So the inside joke goes like this:<br />
<br />
<strong><em><span style="font-size: large;">How many Latinos does it take to bring an elevator from the Pent House to the Lobby? </span></em></strong><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">Who is he? George is a pioneer in the use of social media for community building. From poetry readings to Radio Capicu his efforts have reached out and connected Latinos with their cultural roots. Not to mention the wonderful portfolio managed by <a href="http://sofritoforyoursoul.typepad.com/sofrito_media_group/">Sofrito Media Group</a> which range from cultural to health organizations.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />
Why all the excitement? The #Sofrito Twitter hash tag caught my eye last year and I began to read George's blog. When his call for entries was tweeted, I contributed my poem "Toda Mujer" that got published at the Sofrito For Your Soul blog. For me it will be a privilege to thank George in person.<br />
<br />
I will moderate the panel that will discuss "Using Social Media for Social Good" an event organized by Latinos in Social Media LATISM and sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. But perhaps the most significant part of this event will be the fact that we will be joining forces to help children in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, through the LATISM Sustainable Projects. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />

That same day she opened a Twitter account and began connecting. By the fourth day, she sent this message into my stream:</span></div><!-- http://twitter.com/#!/almalania/status/43538445792055296 --> <style type='text/css'>.bbpBox43538445792055300 {background:url(http://a0.twimg.com/profile_background_images/212800104/turquoise_swirl2.jpg) #2ac4c4;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px;padding-top:12px;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #fff;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0 0px;width:38px;height:38px} p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block}</style> <div class='bbpBox43538445792055300'><p class='bbpTweet'>@<a class="tweet-url username" href="http://twitter.com/soylamar" rel="nofollow">soylamar</a> As an unemployed college student what can I do to take advantage of Twitter?<span class='timestamp'><a title='Fri Mar 04 05:09:09 +0000 2011' href='http://twitter.com/#!/almalania/status/43538445792055296'>less than a minute ago</a> via <a href="http://twitter.com/devices" rel="nofollow">txt</a></span><span class='metadata'><span class='author'><a href='http://twitter.com/almalania'><img src='http://a0.twimg.com/profile_images/1266500290/st_pattys_day_normal.jpg' /></a><strong><a href='http://twitter.com/almalania'>Alma G. So here are my top tips:</span></div><div class="tweet-row" style="color: #444444; display: block; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, "Liberation Sans", FreeSans, sans-serif; line-height: 15px; margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: relative; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><ul><li><div class="tweet-row" style="color: #444444; display: block; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, "Liberation Sans", FreeSans, sans-serif; line-height: 15px; margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; position: relative; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Search & Save</strong>. Use relevant and popular hash tags such as #jobs or #careers, combine them with your ideal location such as #NJ #NY or a city #NYC. Save the search and you can always go back to check out the recent tweets with the hash tag.</span><span style="color: black;"> </span></span></div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Find & Follow.</strong> Find the twitter accounts for recruiters of the organizations where you would like to work. Follow them and save these accounts in lists. If your stream gets flooded you can easily go back to the list and check out their latest tweets. </span></div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>File in Favorites</strong>. While reading my stream, three jobs were tweeted and I wanted to mark them for this blog post. I selected them as favorites by clicking the star. So these were kept in my favorites, easy to find and retrieve.</span></div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Connect & Network</strong>. When you follow interesting people interacting is easy. You realize that job openings are generally filled through word of mouth recruiting. Twitter is great a vehicle for connectors. For example, my friends own their businesses, they asked me to help them fill job openings, I posted this information on facebook and tweeted about it. </span></div></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Twitter is in constant motion and tweets can just get lost into what I call the black holes of twitterverse. So remember: Search & Save, Find & Follow, File in Favorites, and Connect & Network.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Muy agradecida for reaching out, hope these tips help your job hunt!</span><br />

<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
Y... ¿Cuál es tu plan? </div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
